Chemistry Course Outline
1st Semester
Unit 0 - Introduction Materials
- This unit is covers concepts that need to be mastered before chemistry concepts are covered. This section includes items like: scientific notation, graphing, significant figures, lab safety, lab equipment, and the scientific method.
Unit 1 - Density
- This is a short unit that focuses on the relationship between mass and volume and how this looks on a molecular level.
Unit 2 - Energy
- Unit 2 relates energy to the movement of molecules and how it relates to phase changes.
Unit 3 - Compounds
- Unit 3 helps students determine the differences between compounds and mixtures. Compounds are then separated into molecular and ionic. Students will also be able to name and write the fomumla of both molecular and ionci compounds.
Unit 4 - Reactions
- This unit introduces the idea of a chemical reactions. The class will study 5 types of reactions and will be able to predict the products of various reactions.
Unit 5 - Atomic Structure
- This last unit of the semester will cover the basic atomic structure of an atom and electron configuration.
